Gun Control

Gun control has never been more relevant to our country than it is now, and I think there should be reasonable regulations on the second amendment in order to tackle this problem. Although I believe it is a constitutional right that Americans have the right to bear arms, gun violence is a very prominent problem and while I do want to protect your rights, I also want to protect your lives. Strengthening background checks and enforcing existing laws is an important first step in order to prevent more gun-related tragedies throughout our nation.

• Background Checks

  • ​More than 90% of the American public supports background checks for all gun sales

  • Over 3 million people legally prohibited from possessing a gun have been stopped from purchasing a gun or denied a permit to purchase, many of them being felons. Without these background checks, guns would have easily fallen into the wrong hands, no questions asked

  • Background checks are quick and efficent, taking up little to no time and without infringing on your constitutional rights

    • ​In at least 90% of cases, firearm background checks processed through the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) are resolved immediately. The average processing time for an electronic NICS-check is less than two minutes.

• Safety Measures​

  • We must require a photo license I.D., a background check, and a gun safety test in order for one to purchase a gun

  • We must enforce mandatory child safety locks and ensure that proper child safety precautions are in order

• Close the Gun Show Loophole

  • Gun Show Loophole: Gun stores must obtain a federal license as a gun dealer however, private sellers (those at gun shows) are exempted from conducting the background check required of gun dealers with a federal firearms license

  • This enables sales by private citizens to other citizens to occur at any time without the proper background checks being conducted. Needless to say, this is very dangerous and alarming as guns can easily fall into the wrong hands this way

  • I will enforce a law to make certain that everyone selling guns, no matter where, must obtain a federal license as a gun dealer before doing so so that guns do not fall into the wrong hands.
